Hepititis A

What is hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It typically spreads through ingesting contaminated food or water or close contact with an infected person. Hepatitis A can cause mild to severe illness, and while most people recover fully, it can lead to severe complications in some cases.

Importance of Hepatitis A vaccination

Hepatitis A is prevalent in many parts of the world, particularly in regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. Travellers to these areas are at a higher risk of contracting the virus. Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect yourself from hepatitis A.

At our participating pharmacies, we provide the hepatitis A vaccine as part of our travel health services. The vaccine is administered as an injection and effectively prevents the disease.

  • First dose: administered at least two weeks before travel.
  • Second dose: given 6 to 12 months after the first dose to ensure long-term protection.
