Period delay

Understanding period delay

Some people may wish to delay their period for practical reasons, such as travel or important events. Period delay treatment may be an option in certain circumstances and is intended for short-term use only, following a consultation with a pharmacist.

Period delay treatment is not suitable for everyone and can only be supplied after an assessment to ensure it is safe and appropriate.

Period delay services

Selected pharmacies offer a confidential period delay service.
During a consultation, a pharmacist will ask questions about your health, medical history, and any medicines you are taking.

If suitable, a prescription-only medicine may be supplied to temporarily delay your period.

How does period delay treatment work?

Period delay treatment works by using a hormone-based medicine that supports the natural hormone levels involved in the menstrual cycle. By maintaining these hormone levels, the lining of the womb is not shed as usual, which delays menstrual bleeding until the medicine is stopped.

Who is period delay treatment suitable for?

Period delay treatment may be suitable for some people who:

  • Are aged 16 years or over
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are not currently using hormonal contraception
  • Do not have certain medical conditions, such as a history of blood clots
  • Wish to delay their period for a short period of time only

A pharmacist will determine suitability during the consultation.

Who period delay may not be suitable for

Period delay treatment may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions or risk factors, including:

  • A history of blood clots, stroke, or heart disease
  • Liver problems
  • Hormone-dependent cancers
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding

If treatment is not suitable, the pharmacist will explain why and advise on alternative options where appropriate.

How the treatment is taken

If treatment is supplied, the pharmacist will explain:

    • When to start taking the tablets
    • How often to take them
    • How long the treatment can be used
    • Menstrual bleeding usually resumes a few days after the treatment is stopped. Always follow the pharmacist’s instructions.

Important information

  • Period delay treatment is not a contraceptive
  • It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Side effects can occur and will be discussed during your consultation
  • Seek medical advice if you experience unexpected or concerning symptoms
  • The cost of the period delay service, including consultation and medicine where supplied, is £19.50.
