Summer in Skiathos

Situated in the Aegean Sea is a sliver of paradise- the island of Skiathos.

The lush verdant banks that border the beaches makes it one of the greenest Greek islands to visit, and the soft golden sands that go gently into the clear blue water is comparable to something you might experience in the Caribbean.

However, unlike the Caribbean, this dreamy destination is only a 3.5 hour flight away and as the island is around 7 miles long, you can be on the beach within an hour of stepping off your plane - making it the perfect place for a quick getaway.

These breath-taking beaches serve as a total haven for relaxation, with much of the west coast offering a few sunbeds and a taverna, and a couple remaining totally empty. If you want to lie on the sand with a book in your hand, there’s nowhere better for it.

If you want a little more luxury, look to the east coast of the island. There’s plenty of beach resorts with fancy sunbeds, music playing and drinks flowing, and of course, you’re surrounded in the same stunning scenery.

Despite these beautiful beaches being inevitably popular with tourists, Skiathos has maintained it’s Greek charm- which is particularly telling in the old town. The cobbled streets, fishing boats dotted in the harbour, and traditional tavernas give an authentic feel. In the evening time, there’s a nice buzz and plenty of places to enjoy a reasonably priced meal, or a cocktail overlooking the water.

In terms of day-time activities, the crystal-clear waters are ideal for snorkelling, especially in areas with more stones. The National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is the largest marine protected area in Europe, meaning there’s plenty of wildlife to observe. There’s an array of water sports on offer, yachts to take you on day trips, and private boat hire available as well.

Sue Hare

Our travel expert Sue Hare loves the destination so much, she's returned again and again; so many times she's lost count, but estimates it to be around 5 or 6 times.

She said: “I never thought I would go somewhere more than once, but I just love the beaches in Skiathos.”

“You can enjoy a meal in the Old Town very cheaply, and there’s a great atmosphere at night especially. It’s authentic and very well looked after.”

“I also love Skopelos, which is a nearby island. It’s even less commercial there, it doesn’t have an airport so you can only reach it by boat, and it’s well worth a visit- it only takes about 45 minutes from Skiathos.”
