Going Solo

Sometimes getting away on your own from the hustle and bustle of life can be the perfect break.

It's great to be with friends and family but there's always an element of compromise. When unaccompanied you have the freedom to choose what's best for you - the world really is our oyster!

Saga is a great place to start when choosing your own solo cruise adventure. There's activities on board too with a special 'Singles Mingles' drinks party which takes place on each cruise. It's the perfect way to meet and socialise with fellow cruisers.

When the ship is at port and people are heading out to explore, Saga can arrange single meet ups off shore. Saga's cruise down the River Nile is the perfect combination of discovery and culture - a great fit for a traveler wanting to see something new while learning about the mysteries of ancient Egypt.

Travelling solo means you can be a little bit more adventurous and a cruise to South Africa might be what you need. See diverse landscapes and wildlife in small groups where you can speak to expert guides.

Norwegian Cruise Line also specialises in solo cruises and offers reduced single supplements for regular storerooms on select cruises.

Its seven-day Greek Isles cruise from Venice is one of the best ways to see the islands. You'll never feel truly alone in Greece as the locals make you feel like family wherever you go. From gorging on fresh hummus or watching the sun set over crystal blue waters, you'll be living your best life.

Love boat

Ann Stimson is a regular cruise customer at our Louth Travel branch. On a solo cruise, she met her future husband...

"I always went on a cruise for my birthday, and for my 75th I wanted one to remember," says Ann. She went on a seven-day Norwegian cruise on the Britannia with P&O Cruises and met up with other passengers at a get together on the first day. There's where she first saw Andrew Bollen, her future husband, and later they got talking on an excursion.

"We had just come out of a church and it was raining, I noticed Andrew was on his own with an umbrella. We shared it and from there we started chatting."

The pair continued to talk at a group meal and people joked that they were married; which broke the ice for the whole table. When Ann's birthday fell during the cruise, Andrew had flowers delivered to her cabin.

Their holiday ended, but the romance didn't. After Ann got back, they met up regularly and in February 2019, they were engaged. The pair married this September and some of the guests on the cruise were even there.
