Wragby Warhammers
The only baseball team in Lincolnshire, the Wragby Warhammers, is currently being supported through our Community Champions scheme.
This is not only a group where new sports skills can be developed and fitness levels can be improved, but it’s where new friendships can be formed and players can mentally unwind.
The team was established in 2021 by local people who wanted some exercise and socialisation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Over the last five years, the team has been successful through the baseball leagues and last season played in the country’s second highest league, among teams from big cities, like Manchester and Liverpool.
Steve Buchanan (pictured above), player and club committee member at the Wragby Warhammers, joined the team in January 2024 and has watched it grow since.
He said: “The group began when someone local posted on the local Facebook page asking if anyone wanted to get out of their house and throw a ball around a field. From there, the Wragby Warhammers was born and five years later we have over 20 players.
“I decided to join in 2024 because I wanted to make new friends and, within six months, I formed friends who I know will be with me for life. We didn’t know each other before, but we’ve bonded over a passion for the same sport and that’s really special.”
Training takes place every Sunday from 1:30pm to 3pm, at the Wragby Reload Centre during the winter months and moves to their ‘Hammer Park’ home field at Wragby FC football pitches as Spring and Summer approaches.
Experience playing baseball doesn’t matter when it comes to joining this team – no matter your age, gender or skill level, anyone is welcome to come along to training.
Being part of a sports team can sometimes be costly, but the club is determined to keep costs low for its players. However, as a smaller team with not as much funding as other clubs, buying equipment for all their players can be challenging.
Steve said: “Baseball is an expensive sport and can determine if people come back each season, so funding helps us provide equipment for our players who see cost as a barrier to participating.
“This not only benefits the players’ fitness if they keep coming back every week but also benefits the club because we can continue to grow – donations from Community Champions will help with this so much.
“Thank you to everyone who has used their dividend card and helped raise money, your generosity means so much to the club and the Wragby community.”
Any funds raised between September 2025 and March 2026 for the Wragby Warhammers will help make baseball more accessible for people in the local area and promote physical and mental wellbeing.
