Traditional smoked fish from Grimsby has joined the growing number of products in Lincolnshire Co-op’s Love Local range.
Shoppers can now enjoy the great taste of Alfred Enderby’s Grimsby Traditional Smoked Haddock, which is produced at the well-known smokehouse near the town’s docks.
The product is stocked in most of our food stores including Grimsby-area shops in Holton Le Clay, Waltham, Wybers Wood and Coniston Avenue.
Grimsby Traditional Smoked Haddock is the only product in Lincolnshire to have protected geographical status from the European Union, making it a unique item in Lincolnshire Co-op.
It’s famous in the culinary world too – celebrity chef Marco Pierre White insists on the firm’s haddock and buys it direct for his Rudloe Arms hotel.
Owner Patrick Salmon said: “We care and put a lot of time and effort into producing the world’s best smoked fish. We don’t cut corners, we put our fish in smokehouses longer which does make the fish weigh less but we don’t mind because we’re after the taste and quality.
“Selling our beautiful product through Lincolnshire Co-op is a great opportunity to let other people appreciate it. This isn’t the cheapest fish in the world but it is some of the best. This is a real treat that is like no other fish you have tried. Take time preparing it, it takes very little cooking and makes a fantastic meal. You and your friends will really enjoy it.”
The haddock is brought fresh from the Grimsby fish market on the Grimsby fish docks. It is smoked in the same traditional way that has remained unchanged in the last 100 years.
It is smoked over wood in tall brick chimneys overnight, packaged and then shipped out to Lincolnshire Co-op stores ready for customers to enjoy.
Lincolnshire Co-op’s Love Local Category Manager Judy Lyon said: “We’re excited to be stocking this world-famous product that is loved by many. This smoked haddock is the only food in Lincolnshire that has protected geographical status and we are proud to support Alfred Enderby by stocking it.
“We hope lots of our customers will enjoy the fantastic flavour and appreciate the hard work and skill that goes into making this traditional product.”
Our Love Local range features some of the best food and drink that the area has to offer, including beer, bread, meat, cheese, crisps and Chapman’s fish cakes, also from Grimsby.
