Local mental health support

Boston’s Men’s Shed, one of our current Community Champions, is much more than just a workshop; it’s a safe and welcoming space, where men of all ages come together to be creative and talk openly.

For many men, talking about their feelings can feel uncomfortable. The Men’s Shed makes emotional vulnerability less confronting, because the focus is on doing something practical together. By working on projects side-by-side, members can share their stories in their own time, as conversations naturally flow.

The group undertake various projects, ranging from benches and summer houses to children’s toys and Christmas decorations.

You don’t have to be handy to become a member; men of all walks of life, experience, and mobility become members, and some simply join for a coffee and biscuit.

Ian Johnstone, Secretary at Boston Men’s Shed, said: “A couple of years ago, I faced an exceptionally hard time in my life; my wife died, and shortly afterwards, I had to move to New Zealand to become a full-time carer for my brother, who was very unwell.

“When I returned to the UK, I sought support online and came across Boston’s Men’s Shed. I’ve always been very practical, so decided to give it a try.

“Being part of the group at such a pivotal time helped me immensely, and I think without it I would have been very lonely.”

“I’ve been coming for around 18 months now, and have since become Secretary, as I wanted to help other local men who may be facing similar struggles.”

Many of their creations support the local community, giving members a sense of purpose. For example, the club has produced many bird box kits, which include parts cut to size, and holes already drilled. These were given to people with learning difficulties, who enjoyed being able to put the boxes together and decorate them.

John Mould, Chairman at Boston Men’s Shed, said: “People come for a whole range of reasons; they may be bereaved, in poor health, or have just lost their way a bit after retirement.

“Being part of Boston’s Men’s Shed is a great way to build confidence and make friends. Plus, as well as supporting each other, we’re able to support the local community with all the things we make! Everyone’s a winner.”

For any work they complete, the Men’s Shed only charge to cover their own costs, including materials and a contribution towards running fees. However, in the future, the group would like to do some free-of-charge charity work. They are also looking to expand their space, and have recently taken on an additional unit.

Boston’s Men’s Shed is one of our current Community Champions, and any funds raised between September 2025 and March 2026 will help with future developments and the running costs associated with running this essential community service.
