We recently supported Lincoln and Lindsey Blind Society by providing free first aid training to its members.
The volunteer-led society, founded in 1921, aims to enable people with sight loss to achieve a better quality of life. The group wanted to learn about first aid, but were struggling to find an organisation that was able to cater to their requirements.
Jim Griffiths from Lincolnshire Co-op's learning and development team routinely runs first aid training courses, and was keen to share his knowledge with the charity.
Jim demonstrated the fundamentals of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and answered questions the group had about first aid. The training was adapted to be accessible for individuals with sight loss.
The group's Volunteer Co-ordinator, Eve Roach said: "People with visual impairments can already feel excluded from parts of society. Learning skills like first aid proves that anybody can help in an emergency situation.
"Many members of the group live in rural communities where emergency vehicles may not be as quick to respond. Even basic first aid knowledge could help save a life. Doing something is better than doing nothing."
Lincoln and Lindsey Blind Society has a team of sight impairment officers who make home visits and provide support and advice to those who need it. This can include ensuring they're in receipt of the correct benefits, helping to apply for blue badges and offering suggestions for living day-to-day life with visual impairment.
The issue of social isolation is something they also aim to tackle with weekly meetings and social activities across the county. From talking newspapers to befriending services, the charity is working hard to provide practical help as well as emotional support.
