We’re pulling on our wellies and gardening gloves to finish this year’s Big Co-op Clean.
Together, Lincolnshire Co-op colleagues and members are lending a hand at green space projects, from community gardens to public parks and school learning spaces.
The volunteering events kicked off support for green spaces under the Community Champions scheme, which will see the Society help out more than 20 projects.
One of the first to get a helping hand from Big Co-op Clean volunteers was High Flight Memorial Park in Wellingore, on Tuesday 6th June.
It’s being developed by Wellingore Parish Council to remember Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee Jr, whose poem ‘High Flight’ became a symbol of the forces.
Groups also visited Long Sutton Primary School and Burgh Angling Society and Community Nature Reserve at volunteering events on Thursday 8th June.
Colleagues from Lincolnshire Co-op’s coffee shop in Long Sutton, funeral services in Spalding, Long Sutton and Holbeach and the Society’s head office all donned gardening gloves to help at Long Sutton.
Head Teacher of Long Sutton Primary School Bill Lord said: “The difference they have made to our environmental area is truly transformational and will allow the children to access new areas of our wood.
“It will also allow us to build a fire-pit and seating zone to give the children a place to share stories and learn outdoors.”
On June 13th, volunteers gave a hand to the Centre4 Nunsthorpe estate community hub in Grimsby.
More than 30 Grimsby-area colleagues and members spent the day clearing the outside area, cutting down overgrown plants and weeding.
Their efforts will help Centre4 create a revamped outside area, featuring raised beds to grow vegetables and a games garden.
Centre4’s Chief Officer Linda Dellow said: “It made a real difference because there was a lot to do and that could have been overwhelming had we tried to undertake it ourselves.”
Colleagues and members got together to help Olsen Park at Lincoln’s Carlton Centre on June 15th.
And, a clean-up at Anderby Beach and a volunteering event at Hartsholme Park in Lincoln will finish the Big Co-op Clean this year, on Saturday, 17th June.
