Responsible sourcing

3

We are committed to ensuring responsible sourcing that prioritises ethical practices, transparency and environmental sustainability throughout our supply chain.

By the end of 2030, we want all our suppliers to be screened against sustainability criteria and signed up to our supplier code of conduct.

Our achievements so far…

62 electric vehicles

We’re investing in electric vehicles for our fleet, and now have 40 hybrid electric vehicles and 22 fully electric vehicles.

As technology develops, we will be looking to grow our eco-fleet further.

RCups

Alongside our Costa Express machines, we have a range of rCups on sale - the world’s first reusable cup made from recycled single-use coffee cups.

To reward those who make the switch, we offer our members 25p extra cashback when they bring a reusable cup. It’s simply added onto their dividend card at the till.

So far, we’ve given out over £17,517 cashback through this scheme.

Sustainable palm oil

All palm oil in our Co-op branded products is sustainably sourced through RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certification.

Our very own Gadsby’s bakery also uses sustainable palm oil.

Funerals

We ensure we provide eco options to those using our funeral services.

We’re able to provide coffins constructed from a range of materials, including eco-wood or cardboard. We also provide wildflower seeds to all funeral clients.

FSC or PEFC certified paper

We have a paper purchasing policy to ensure that we’re only using products that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest) certified.

Currently, we’re working with our suppliers such as printers and stationers to make sure that this is applied across the business.

FSC certified wood

All the wood we use as part of building new outlets is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified.

45 local suppliers

We have our own Love Local range, which includes a range of products made in and around our trading area.

As well as making it easier for customers to support local businesses while enjoying high quality, unique products, sourcing products locally helps us to reduce food miles.
