Healthy Habits

January is Healthy Habits Month, the perfect time to put yourself first and make 2026 your healthiest year yet. We’ve got easy ways to get started...

❤️‍🩹 Self Care

Self care is about taking time to recharge, reset, and feel your best, both physically and mentally💆‍♂️

Whether you’re taking part in Try January to explore healthier choices, enjoying free fruit for under 13's to build good habits early 🍎or making simple healthy swaps in everyday routines, small steps can have a big impact.

From relaxing getaways that help you unwind ⛱️ to Community Cuppa's that bring people together over a warm drink and a friendly chat 🫖we’re here to support feel-good moments that nurture wellbeing and connection all year round.

Did you know you can add under 13s to your membership - meaning they can enjoy free fruit in some of the school holidays (and get a card on their birthday).

Our next free fruit initiative starts on 12th January.

Balancing screen time doesn’t have to mean strict rules or daily battles. Often, it’s about offering appealing alternatives and creating a healthy mix of online and offline activities.

Reading and libraries
Reading is a calm and enriching alternative to screens. We operate three volunteer-led Community Libraries that offer free access to books for people of all ages. They’re welcoming spaces where children can explore stories, build imagination, and develop a lifelong love of reading. To find out more about our community libraries, click here.

Keeping active through sport and fitness
Movement plays an important role in children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Local sports clubs and informal play groups give children a chance to release energy, learn teamwork, and build friendships away from screens. We support dozens of community groups across our area that create positive opportunities for children to stay active.

Youth centres and community spaces
Youth centres offer safe, supportive environments where children and teenagers can spend time together, try new activities, and relax without relying on phones. These spaces help nurture confidence, social skills, and a sense of belonging within the community.

Screen time blockers
Screen time tools can help families set gentle boundaries around when and how devices are used. Many smartphones and tablets now include built-in features that make this easier to manage. Used thoughtfully, these tools can support routines, sleep, and focus - without the need for constant checking. You can find more at Smartphone Free Childhood.

Parental controls
Parental controls can help filter content, manage app downloads, and set age-appropriate limits. When used alongside open conversations, they act as a helpful safety net rather than a form of monitoring. Talking with children about why limits are in place can help them feel included and respected.

Limits on social media
Social media can influence children’s mood, confidence, and attention in powerful ways. Setting clear, age-appropriate boundaries around social media use can support a healthier relationship with online platforms. This might involve delaying access, limiting daily use, or keeping devices out of bedrooms at night whatever feels right for your family.

As screen use becomes part of everyday life, online safety is just as important as limiting screen time:

Children-only social media and messaging apps
Some apps are designed specifically for younger users, offering safer environments with parental involvement built in. Platforms like Messenger Kids and Kuddle focus on closed networks, meaning children can only communicate with approved contacts. Apps like YouTube Kids also provide a closed garden approach to content, restricting access to content that is only created for children in mind. While no app is perfect, these options can be a gentler introduction to online communication.

Password tips and good digital habits
Strong passwords are a simple but powerful way to protect not only children, but adults too, online. Cyber security organisations such as the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommend:

  • Using long passwords made up of three random words
  • Avoiding personal information like names or birthdays
  • Not reusing passwords across multiple apps or accounts

Teaching children basic password habits early helps build digital confidence and awareness that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Heart-healthy foods are rich in nutrients that support cardiovascular wellness and help reduce the risk of heart disease.

These foods include:

  • fruits and vegetables 🍉
  • whole grains 🌾
  • lean proteins like fish and legumes 🐟
  • healthy fats such as those found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil🥑

They are typically high in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which help lower cholesterol, regulate blood pressure, and reduce inflammation.

Limiting added sugars, salt, and saturated fats while choosing these nourishing options can play an important role in maintaining a strong and healthy heart.
