Retail apprenticeships

David Jameson Retail Apprentice

Food shopping is something most of us do. From picking up a single pint of milk, to filling an over-flowing trolley, we have lots of different customers!

During this 18 month training scheme you’ll be working towards achieving an Advanced Apprenticeship in Customer Service. The majority of this qualification is assessed within the workplace at one of our food stores, alongside professional discussion and completion of a portfolio.

Your training will start on your first day of employment, when you attend our corporate induction at our head office in Lincoln. During your first week with us you will also attend a welcome event, where you will learn all about your programme and what we expect from you, and will also meet other apprentices in your cohort so that you can build a network of contacts.

The rest of your programme is structured in modules and covers all the essential areas so you will understand how retail works. Each module of your programme includes on the job and off the job training and you will attend face to face courses as well as spending some time undertaking self-study. The modules focus on store operations, till procedures, fresh food, legislative checks, security and customer care, and you will also have the opportunity to learn about and visit other key business areas including our food distribution centre, bakery and head office.

Throughout the programme you will have regular reviews with your line manager, as well as monthly meetings with your college assessor and head office mentor.

This role is focused on giving great customer service and if you are keen to progress to a management role in a retail environment then this may suit you. Being able to build rapport quickly with a range of people and being adaptable are also key strengths to perform well in this role.

On successful completion of the Retail Apprenticeship Programme you will be working as a permanent team leader in one of our food stores.

If you’ve really excelled during your programme you may be giving the opportunity to continue your learning and offered a place on our Degree Level Apprenticeship in Business Management. This could even lead to a career as a food store manager
