The Fairtrade mark was introduced to ensure a better deal for growers and producers in developing countries. At Lincolnshire Co-operative, we’ve been supporters of Fairtrade since we introduced our first product bearing the mark in 1992.
Fairtrade means producers receive a set price for their goods, above market value, which covers the cost of production and allows for growth and sustainability. For workers, Fairtrade means decent working conditions.
Producers also get a Fairtrade premium to invest in the local community. This is used to support wide range of projects – from installing clean water supplies to building schools and roads.
We believe in the principles behind Fairtrade and we’ve developed a whole range of own-branded Fairtrade products including tea, coffee, sugar, chocolate and many, many more.
It’s not just about selling Fairtrade goods. We make an effort to encourage our customers to switch by holding events like tastings and demonstrations. We also offer our members 5x dividend points on all Fairtrade products, which is equal to five per cent of the price.
